Second Home celebrates the diversity and multiculturalism that characterizes NDI New Mexico. To see the cultural diversity of the families at The Dance Barns is to understand the power that dance has to unite people from different backgrounds. Despite cultural differences, the interaction of our families and students makes The Dance Barns that second home where all are welcome, seen, and celebrated. The evening features the most dedicated and advanced dancers from our programs, performing works by faculty and guest artists that are sure to inspire audiences of all ages.
The first piece of the program, Pearls, and Pliés, choreographed by Allegra Lillard in collaboration with Company XCel, is a tribute to ballet teacher Sheila Rozann. For over seven decades, Sheila has masterfully imparted her knowledge and passion for ballet, including a decade at NDI New Mexico, where she left an indelible mark on her students, who will dance an homage to her.
The second piece, Pale Blue Dot, from Eugene Ballet resident choreographer Suzanne Haag, is an exploration of the two homes we all have in common; each of us at home within our own body, and the global home that we all share, planet earth.
To close the evening, Second Home, created by Dance Barns Artistic Director Rodney Rivera, reveals the relevance and strength of the diversity of our dancers, with choreography inspired by poems written by the dancers about their families and cultural identities. A chamber orchestra conducted by renowned Taiwanese concert pianist Jessie Wenchieh Lo will grace the evening with live music.
