ABOUT ABOUT

El Muro/The Wall

Choreographed by NDI New Mexico’s inaugural Teaching Artist in Residence, Dana Tai Soon Burgess,  El Muro/The Wall explores the plight of migrants from Latin America seeking asylum at the U.S./Mexico border. It examines the universal desire for a secure home and the obstacles of overcoming loss to start anew in the United States. Dana Tai Soon Burgess is the Artistic Director of Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company, Resident Choreographer at The Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., and author of “Chino and the Dance of the Butterfly“, a memoir about his life growing up in Santa Fe in a multi-cultural family and his evolution as an artist journeying from Santa Fe to the world stage.

Unfolding

A collaboration with Luci Tapahonso, Poet Laureate of the Navajo Nation, Lauren Camp, New Mexico’s current Poet Laureate, and Rodney Rivera, Dance Barns Artistic Director. These esteemed writers will actively participate in the design of the choreography by Rodney Rivera through the selection of narratives within their literary works. Through these creations they impart profound insights into the significance of womanhood, illuminating its challenges and virtues through diverse perspectives. NDI New Mexico advanced dancers will also learn about creative writing from these local masters, and have their words and ideas integrated in the choreography.
