ABOUT ABOUT

El Muro/The Wall

Choreographed by NDI New Mexico’s inaugural Teaching Artist in Residence, Dana Tai Soon Burgess,  El Muro/The Wall explores the plight of migrants from Latin America seeking asylum at the U.S./Mexico border. It examines the universal desire for a secure home and the obstacles of overcoming loss to start anew in the United States. Dana Tai Soon Burgess is the Artistic Director of Dana Tai Soon Burgess Dance Company, Resident Choreographer at The Smithsonian Institution in Washington D.C., and author of “Chino and the Dance of the Butterfly“, a memoir about his life growing up in Santa Fe in a multi-cultural family and his evolution as an artist journeying from Santa Fe to the world stage.

Unfolding

A collaboration with Luci Tapahonso, Navajo Nation Inaugural Poet Laureate, Lauren Camp, New Mexico’s current Poet Laureate, Rodney Rivera, Dance Barns Artistic Director, and Dr. Jessie Wenchieh Lo, Dance Barns Music Director. These esteemed writers will actively participate in the design of the choreography by Rodney Rivera through the selection of narratives within their literary works. Through these creations they impart profound insights into the significance of womanhood, illuminating its challenges and virtues through diverse perspectives. Not only have NDI New Mexico advanced dancers delved into the creative writing process with these local masters, but the students’ own words and voices have been woven into the fabric of the choreography.
